Big Macrame Wall Hanging at Rare Bird in Oakland, CA

All you need to learn the art of macrame is two hands and some rope. In this workshop, you will create a large scale wall hanging that utilizes the most important knots in macrame- the double half hitch, square knot, larks heads knots, overhand knots, and half square knots. Once you learn these skills, you will be able to create all sorts of macrame projects on your own. 

Each student will leave class with a completed wall hanging, ready to adorn their walls. Wall hangings measure at least 10" x 20" 

Jennie will provide dowels and thick 5mm cotton cord to knot with. Students will leave with an instruction packet and a quick guide to macrame, which includes directions for other knots and techniques not covered in class.

Materials Included! 
Wear clothes you can get paint on.

Inspired by the natural beauty of Northern California, Jennie launched Jenny Lemons (jennylemons.com), a collection of modern block printed and hand painted women’s clothing and textiles. Jennie's work has been featured in publications like the San Francisco Chronicle, Brit + Co, and San Francisco Magazine. When not working in her studio, Jennie leads fiber art workshops all over the Bay Area.

Jenny Lemons Textile Design at Rare Bird in Oakland, CA

Learn the basics of textile design to create your own printed jersey dress. In this workshop, everyone will learn how to carve a rubber stamp with their own design, apply ink, print, and add additional details with fabric paint and a paint brush. We will discuss different ways of creating a repetitive pattern, basic color theory, and how to make sure your print lasts forever. In this class, we will focus on printing on fabric, but the techniques learned can translate to many other materials, like paper, clothing, and wood. Once you learn, you won't want to stop! The possibilities are endless and make great gifts! All supplies are included and every student will leave with their custom block and their printed dress.

This class is open to only 12 people.  Register early.

Weaving on a Loom with Thick Yarn and Roving

Do you see a fluffy woven wall hanging and just swoon? Does the high price tags on that work turn you away? Learning how to weave is very easy and rewarding! You will be addicted in no time!

In this workshop we will learn the basics of weaving including how to warp a loom, how to weave with a needle, and how to use different kinds of yarn. We will learn some fancy weaving techniques like Rya (aka tassels) and Soumak- a decorative braid embellishment. We've chosen some really beautiful yarn for everyone to use! We have natural roving and soft wool yarns in muted tones, cotton cord, and acrylic yarn in crazy colors. 

This workshop includes all materials and each student will go home with their project, weaving tools, and a high quality hand held loom. The loom is constructed from hardwoods and was made in America.

In this workshop you will learn basic stitches like the running stitch, back stitch, satin stitch and French knot that will create unique surfaces, lines, and texture. Embroidery Workshop at Gather

Join us Thursday June 1st as we learn the basics of embroidery and create an adorable sampler. In this class Jennie Lennick will teach us how to successfully sew several different embroidery stitches that will create unique surfaces, lines, and texture. We will learn how to transfer images to fabric by using original patterns created by Jennie- choose from donuts, pizza, plants, leaves, or a combination of all! This isn't your grandma's embroidery class!

All materials will be provided and everyone will take home their project, some extra thread and needles, an embroidery hoop, and a stitch instruction packet for later reference.

Jennie owns Jenny Lemons, a small-batch clothing company based in the Mission. Jennie learned to sew, bake, and embroider as a child growing up in rural Minnesota and draws inspiration from traditional domestic craft. She moved to the Bay Area to attend the San Francisco Art Institute, where she studied painting. Jennie loves constructing garments and teaching workshops all over the city.
